Summary

This Indonesian study analyzed microplastic contamination in pelagic fish caught at a fish landing site in South Sumatra, finding microplastic particles in the fish sampled. The results highlight the entry of microplastics into the seafood supply chain through contaminated fish sold at local markets.

Plastic waste is the most common type of waste found in waters and can cause environmental pollution. Plastics in the water will be degraded by natural processes and will be transformed into small particles called microplastics. Pelagic fish is one of the marine biotas type that potential to be affected by microplastic contamination. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the abundance of microplastics and plastic polymers contained in the digestive tract of pelagic fish. This research was carried out in March – June 2021. The samples of pelagic fish were taken at the Sungsang Fish Auction. Analysis of the abundance of microplastics was carried out using an Olympus CX23 microscope with 4x/0.10 magnification, while analysis of plastic polymers was carried out using the FT-IR test. The results of the study obtained an average abundance value of 13.5 microplastic particles per individual fish. From 28 samples that have been identified, three types of microplastic were found including fiber (208 particles), fragments (105 particles), and films (68 particles). The colors of the microplastic particles found were black (29%), blue (20%), transparent (18%), red (12%), cream (12%), brown (5%), and green (4%). The plastic constituent polymers found were polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), dan high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
