Infrared Spectra Database of Microplastics from the Arctic Marine Environment
Summary
Scientists created a free, public library of over 2,000 chemical "fingerprints" of microplastic particles found in Arctic waters, helping researchers quickly identify what types of plastic (like polyethylene or polystyrene) are polluting even the most remote parts of our oceans. This tool doesn't directly study health effects, but it gives scientists a better, faster way to track how far plastic pollution spreads and what forms it takes, critical groundwork for understanding how microplastics might eventually reach our food and water supplies.
The first spectral database of Arctic microplastics, MICROSCAN (MICROplastics Spectroscopy data for Contamination ANnalysis), is presented. It comprises 2010 FTIR spectra and is freely available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15277130 . The database contains spectra of microplastic particles (0.5–5 mm) collected in the Eastern Arctic Seas in 2020–2021, representing polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and mixed PE/PP polyolefin spectra. For analysis, multiple annotation approaches were employed, including spectral matching, expert validation, and a convolutional neural network (CNN1D) from the mPSAT package ( Environ. Sci. Technol . 2023, 57, 6656). Using these methods, we thoroughly verified the MICROSCAN database, establishing it as a valuable resource for training and validating advanced classification models of environmental microplastic.
