Scientists created a detailed reference library that maps how different types of plastic reflect light, making it easier to detect and identify tiny plastic particles (microplastics) in the environment using special scanning technology. This matters because better detection tools help researchers track where microplastics end up—including in our water, food, and eventually our bodies—which is a key step toward understanding and reducing our exposure to them. Note that this study itself doesn't test health effects; it simply builds a tool to help find microplastics more accurately.
This dataset provides a VIS-NIR-SWIR reflectance spectral library of microplastics measured in the 350-2500 nm range. It includes PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS samples across different particle-size fractions, colors, and material groups. The CSV files contain wavelength, reflectance, polymer type, color, particle-size fraction, and measurement identifier metadata. The library is intended for spectral comparison, preprocessing, reference matching, and machine-learning-based microplastic classification, and is associated with the Microplastic Spectral Analysis App 3 (MSAA3).
