This study found that tiny plastic particles (from a common biodegradable plastic called PBAT) can trigger harmful fat buildup in brain immune cells, potentially contributing to brain inflammation. The good news: certain gut bacteria that produce a beneficial compound called butyrate appear to protect against this damage, suggesting a healthy gut microbiome might help shield the brain from microplastic exposure. This research highlights yet another way that what we eat and the bacteria living in our gut could influence brain health as microplastic pollution becomes increasingly unavoidable in daily life.
