Summary

This Indonesian study identified and mapped microplastic distribution in sediments along the Musi River and its estuary in South Sumatra, analyzing particle types and their relationship to sediment fractions. The work contributes to understanding how microplastics accumulate in tropical riverine and estuarine systems that deliver pollution to the ocean.

Polymers
Study Type Environmental

Microplastics (MPs) has the effect and contamination of aquatic life, especially the life of marine waters affecting these aquatic food chains. MPs is consumted by organisms that range in size from the biggest to the smallest size in the habitat or ecosystem. MPs that enters the water will enter the body of water and will eventually settle in the sediment. This research was the aims of identifying type of the MPs, analyzing the abundance of MPs and the correlation of the type sediment fraction with the abundance of MPs This research was conducted in March 2018 in Musi River Flow and Estuary of South Sumatra Province. The results of the study showed that MPs abundance ranged from 0,52-3,52 particles gr-dw-1.The total microplastic abundance obtained was 17,82 particles gr-1 dry weight sediment with an average abundance of 1,782 particles gr-dw-1. MPs types found were four of them were fragments, foam, granules and fiber with the composition of each type was 54,32%, 4,71%, 4,60% and 36,36%. Meanwhile, the founds is the size of 1000 μm with the composition of 74.68%, 49.53%, 82%, and 85.19%. The types of polymer MPs are found in the form of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, fishing line and bag fiber. The relationship between the type of sediment fraction and MPs abundance shows a positive correlation the spearman rank correlation with value correlation coefficient of 0.208 and significant value of 0,565 (p>0,01).
