Marine Litter and Microplastics
Original title: Basura marina y microplásticos
Summary
This Spanish-language review discusses the scale of marine debris and microplastic pollution, estimating that only about 30% of ocean litter is visible at the surface. The article addresses cultural barriers to behavior change and highlights the ecological consequences of microplastic accumulation in marine food webs.
In the last years, the problem of marine litter and, especially, of microplastics, has become a main concern. The problem is of extreme importance, and it is estimated that only 30% of total marine litter is visible. In addition, it is necessary to fit against well-established habits, because traditionally the usual way to make waste disappear is to throw it to the nearest river. Also, one of the consequences of marine litter growth is the increasing presence of microplastics in the oceans. In this article the problem is revised taking into account the origin of waste and the most important causes of waste generation. Finally, some general solutions proposed by international organizations are summarized
