The Threat of Microplastic Waste in Dumai Waters, Province of Riau, Indonesia
Summary
This study documented microplastic pollution in the coastal waters of Dumai, Riau Province, Indonesia, assessing the extent of contamination from plastic waste in this industrial port city. The findings highlight the threat that poorly managed plastic waste poses to coastal marine ecosystems in developing regions.

This review assessed microplastic abundance across Indonesia's coastal regions, synthesizing studies from rivers, seas, and lakes to document the extent of MP pollution in this archipelago nation with high plastic waste generation and limited waste management infrastructure.
Isolation of Bacteria and Analysis of Microplastic Abundance from Bagansiapiapi Waters in Riau Province, Indonesia
Researchers isolated and identified bacteria from Bagansiapiapi waters in Riau Province, Indonesia, and simultaneously analyzed microplastic abundance at three sampling locations across surface water and subsurface depths. The study documented microplastic contamination in these Indonesian coastal fishing waters and identified bacterial communities potentially associated with plastic debris.
