Analytical methods based on gas chromatography mass spectrometry for the analysis of emerging contaminants: UV filters, bisphenols, and microplastics
AI summary Read the abstract
Scientists developed sensitive new lab methods to detect everyday chemicals like sunscreen ingredients, BPA (found in plastics), and microplastics in seawater and in gut simulation models. These tools confirmed that such contaminants persist in the environment and can show up in the body, helping researchers better track potential health risks from things we're regularly exposed to.
This thesis presents the development and optimization of GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, and Py-GC-MS) for the detection of UV filters, bisphenols, and microplastics in environmental waters and in vitro models. Given the growing environmental concerns and their human exposure associated with these contaminants, particularly their persistence and impact on ecosystems and human health, this study employed cutting edge, solid phase extraction and solid phase microextraction techniques and chromatographic methods to address these challenges. The thesis structured into three main topics, each dedicated to a specific class of emerging contaminants. The first topic explored UV filters, specifically their detection and quantification by SPE and GC-MS/MS in Adriatic seawaters, providing insights into their environmental distribution and concentration. Among UV filters, the thesis further investigated the isomerization product of EHMC (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), a commonly used UV filter, evaluating its phototransformation process under natural and simulated conditions by HS-SPME and GC-MS. In vitro studies on skin models and water matrices helped clarify their behavior and potential risks. The second topic focused on bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues, which are widely used in plastics and consumer products. The research investigated the environmental fate and persistence of these compounds. An organic-solventless procedure using in-vial acetylation SPME was developed and employed to enhance the detection and quantification of bisphenol in various environmental waters. This method allows for improved sensitivity and precision in monitoring bisphenols at trace levels in complex environmental matrices, providing valuable data on their persistence and potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. Thirdly, analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC-MS) was applied to estimate the presence of added polyethylene and polystyrene in an in vitro human colon model system during the duration of the fermentation experiment. A sample pretreatment was adopted based on Fenton oxidation. The results confirmed microplastic presence and highlighted analytical challenges in complex organic matrices.

Towards the comprehensive wide-scope analysis of legacy and emerging contaminants sorbed in microplastics
AI summary Read the abstract
Microplastics don't just pose a direct physical hazard—they also act as sponges, absorbing toxic chemicals from the surrounding environment and potentially delivering concentrated doses to organisms that ingest them. This study developed and validated two analytical methods (using liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) capable of detecting up to 254 different legacy and emerging contaminants in plastic particles at concentrations as low as 0.1 nanograms per gram. The validated methods achieved over 92% accuracy across three plastic polymer types, providing a practical toolkit for researchers monitoring the chemical cocktails hitchhiking on environmental microplastics. Standardizing how these contaminants are measured is essential for understanding the true health and ecological risks of plastic pollution.

Tracking Dynamic Chemical Reactivity Networks with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry: A Case of Microplastic-Derived Dissolved Organic Carbon
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers developed a new method using high-resolution mass spectrometry to track how microplastics made of polyurethane break down into thousands of chemical byproducts when exposed to simulated sunlight in seawater. They found that degradation does not simply break plastics into smaller pieces but creates a complex web of chemical reactions producing many different organic compounds. This is important because these dissolved chemical byproducts from microplastic breakdown could have their own toxic effects on marine life and potentially enter the human food chain.
