Presence and Characterization of Microplastics in Drinking Water of Van Province
Summary
Researchers tested drinking water from Van Province, Turkey and found tiny plastic particles (microplastics) in nearly every sample, mostly tiny fibers from things like synthetic fabrics and packaging. Contamination levels varied by month and included common plastics like PVC and polystyrene, suggesting that even everyday tap and bottled water could be a source of plastic exposure. While scientists are still studying exactly how harmful swallowing microplastics is, this study adds to growing evidence that they're showing up in the water we drink every day.
Microplastics (MPs) have become a growing source of concern on a global scale due to the environmental accumulation of plastic waste and its adverse effects on human health. In this study, the level and nature of MP contamination in various drinking water sources within the province of Van were investigated. A total of 44 samples were analyzed, including 40 field samples collected from 10 different sampling points in March, April, and May, as well as bottled water samples from 4 different brands. To ensure methodological reliability, open-air, distilled water, and equipment control tests were conducted; the average MP count in the control samples was 3.33 ± 0.98 particles/sample, which served as a background reference for interpreting field results. The samples were filtered through 0.45 µm pore-sized glass fiber filters using vacuum filtration; the filters were examined under a stereo microscope for color, shape, and size. Selected samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). A total of 1,980 MPs were detected. The average number of MPs per month was determined to be 31.68 ± 5.06 in March, 12.79 ± 1.84 in April, and 13.68 ± 1.96 in May; March was found to be statistically significantly higher than the other months (p < 0.05). In the shape classification, fiber form was the dominant type (61.4%), followed by pellets (16.1%), fragments (12.4%), filaments (7.6%), and foam (2.3%). In the color analysis, white (32.6%), transparent (24.9%), and blue (20.5%) were identified as the most common colors. Following SEM-EDS and stereomicroscopic examinations, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) polymer types were identified. The findings indicate that drinking water in Van Province is exposed to MP contamination, which poses a potential risk to public health.
