Microplastic Pollution in Bangladesh: A Structured Review of Sources, Impacts, and Policy Responses
Summary
This review pulls together existing research on microplastic pollution in Bangladesh's rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, showing that tiny plastic fragments from textiles, industry, and everyday waste are building up in water and food sources like fish. Since people are exposed to microplastics mainly by eating contaminated food (and possibly breathing them in), this matters because it means plastic pollution isn't just an environmental issue, it's likely entering our bodies through the food chain. The authors call for stronger policies, like banning single-use plastics and improving waste management, to reduce this exposure before more is understood about its long-term health effects

On that basis, global synthesis figures suggest there could be about 5.25 trillion pieces floating on Earth's oceans (≈269 kt); each year rivers discharge up to 1.15–2.41 Mt of plastic into fresh off-coast backwaters away from landfills and cities alone : Chinese banks underwrite nearly one-third of this flow without any residue (4,14,15,17). Laboratory and field evidence shows plastic is eaten at all levels of the food chain, feeding transfer of concomitant contaminants except those in larval fish may require some resurrection and movement before acceptance [39,47–49,55,57–59,54,60–62]. Human exposure comes primarily through food and possibly by inhaling it as well [50,51]. In Bangladesh, where rapid urbanisation together with textile fibre-related emissions exacerbates microplastic burdens carried by rivers (e.g., Buriganga, Turag, Jamuna), lakes and coastal waters as well the Sundarbans. Known polymers include PET, PP, PE PS HDPE and most prevail in biota or sediment as fibres [97–105]. Simple policy responses of targeted law enforcement against one-use plastics and microspheres, together with suggestions for a circular-economy fix to today's waste management problems, enable society as well as poli'tics themselves to avoid (or at least lessen) some- thing catastrophic [70–75]. This review integrates global understanding with special Braggadocio facts to help policy makers understand the nature, source, time course and environmental impact of micro whites in Bangladesh [1,4–6,10–12,14–17,20–23,28,33–38,39,47–49,50,55,57–59,60–62,70–75,97–105].
