Summary
This paper introduces an updated version of a free software tool that helps scientists identify and analyze microplastics found in samples using light-based spectral data. It doesn't reveal new health findings itself, but it improves the reliability and accuracy of the methods researchers use to detect microplastics, which matters because better detection tools are the foundation for understanding how much plastic contamination exists in our food, water, and bodies, and what risks it might pose.
Update 4.08.2026: Version 3.1 improves data traceability and model validation. It adds source-file and sample-group identifiers, quality-control reports, corrected spectrum grouping, and clearer reference–user comparisons. Machine-learning models are now evaluated using group-level cross-validation, keeping repeated spectra from the same sample group together and producing out-of-fold predictions, extended metrics, confusion matrices, and reproducibility files. Final models are refitted only after validation MSAA3 (Microplastic Spectral Analysis App 3) is a standalone Windows desktop application for microplastic spectral data analysis. It supports data preparation, spectral visualization, preprocessing, PCA, reference matching, model training, prediction, feature-importance analysis, and PDF report generation. This is the third development version of the application and the first version made publicly available. MSAA3 is under active development, and future versions will be released with further improvements, corrections, and extended functionality. The EXE version includes built-in reference spectral libraries, while user-generated models, results, plots, and reports are created by users during normal application work.
