The environmental impact of conventional multilayer plastic packaging has accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives in the food sector [1]. Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) laminated with polyethylene (PE) remains the dominant structure for rice packaging due to its excellent mechanical strength, sealability, and moisture barrier properties. However, its complex structure contributes to environmental pollution, resource depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions. This lack of circularity conflicts with Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR), which mandates fully recyclable packaging by 2030, and promotes material simplification, higher recycled content and waste reduction.Recent advances in bio-based and recyclable mono-materials provide potential alternatives [1]. Polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) provide good mechanical performance [2], while polymer blends (e.g., PLA/PHA) improve flexibility and barrier properties [3]. Starch-based and nanocellulose-reinforced films demonstrate enhanced biodegradability [4], although their moisture sensitivity remains a major limitation for dry foods such as rice. Paper-based solutions present strong recyclability advantages but require functional coatings that may compromise circularity.This work reviews recent advances in sustainable materials for rice packaging, assessing their alignment with EU regulatory requirements and circular economy principles.
