AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers examined stomach contents of 30 whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) from the Santos estuary in Brazil and found microplastics in 20% of specimens, raising concern about exposure to emerging pollutants — particularly fishing-related materials — in this economically important estuarine species.

Researchers quantified microplastics in seafloor sediments and digestive tracts of whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) across Guanabara Bay, Brazil, finding uniformly high concentrations of transparent polyester fibers in both sediments and fish, with smaller fish ingesting proportionally more plastic, suggesting direct sediment ingestion as a primary exposure pathway.

Researchers analyzed stomach contents from 40 Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) collected over 10 years off the Ceará coast of Brazil, finding that 95% were contaminated with plastic, with microplastics (averaging 7.77 particles per individual) far more prevalent than larger plastic items and polyurethane, PET, and EVA as the most common polymers.

Differential microplastic contamination of waterbirds in a coastal region associated with trophic groups and spatial distribution

AI summary Read the abstract

A study of waterbird feces in southern Brazil found that shorebirds feeding in sediments had far higher microplastic loads than fish-eating birds, and contamination was worst near urban areas, with polyester and PVC the most common polymers detected. Trophic position and proximity to cities both shape how much plastic wildlife ingests, providing a natural monitoring system for tracking coastal microplastic pollution.
