San Francisco Estuary and Watershed Science 2023

Summary

This paper proposes an environmental education curriculum addressing the challenge of ocean plastic pollution, targeting students and communities in Spanish-speaking regions. It outlines teaching strategies to raise awareness about the sources, pathways, and ecological consequences of plastic waste entering marine environments. The goal is to foster behavioral change and civic engagement as part of a broader response to the ocean plastics crisis.

The evolution of the human being and with it, its activities, have come to generate great discomfort to our Planet. The oceans that surround us occupy most of the Earth, hosting a large marine ecosystem as important as the terrestrial one. They help regulate the global climate and the water cycle and are also an enriching source of marine diversity and food and economic resources for many communities. Our depraved human actions are destroying it, a clear example being the great pollution of the oceans by plastic waste. Therefore, I believe that it is necessary to address this problem and take measures such as activating environmental education programs for the youngest and guiding them on the right path for a change in anthropocentric thinking and begin to value nature and the oceans from a more sustainable and respectful perspective.
