Con Evidencia 2024
José de Jesús López Jiménez, Yessica Fabiola Barajas Aguilar, Mario Humberto Orozco Gutiérrez

Summary

This paper examines the environmental consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on the increase in single-use plastic waste and microplastic pollution in Spanish-speaking regions. The authors call for greater public awareness and policy action to address these compounding environmental challenges.

Plastic pollution is a growing problem. Microplastics as pollutants have severe effects on the environment. Microplastics form due to the degradation of plastic when exposed to sunlight, water, microorganisms, and wind. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, various measures were implemented to prevent its spread, including the use of disposable face masks, leading to an alarming increase in such waste in municipal trash. We are on the brink of a pollution problem that will affect public health in Mexico and around the world.
