Impacts and Challenges of Volunteer Efforts in Marine Litter Cleanup

Researchers investigated the sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) onto different polymer types of microplastics, finding that hydrophobic polymers like polyethylene exhibited significantly higher sorption capacity than polar polymers. These results have implications for understanding microplastics as vectors for co-occurring organic pollutants in marine environments.
海洋プラスチックごみ問題に対し，環境中へ流出したごみの回収は直接的な効果を有する。そのため，ボランティアによるごみ拾い活動は海洋プラスチックごみ問題に重要な貢献を果たしていると考えられる。しかしながら，ボランティアごみ拾いの可能性に焦点を当てた研究は少ない。本稿では，近畿圏のボランティア団体を対象とした質問紙調査を行い，ボランティアが環境中のごみ削減に果たしている役割と，効果的な回収の促進に向けた課題について考察した。調査の結果，平均的には1団体あたり年間で容積270 〜4,310 L，重量30 〜550 kg程度の人工系ごみが回収されていると推察された。また，ボランティア1人あたり年間数時間から百時間以上がごみ拾いに投入されている可能性が示唆された。一方で，ごみ処理手続きの複雑さ等に起因する各種の明示的・潜在的費用の負担，人手や情報の不足が活動の阻害要因になっており，これらの改善が求められる。
