Coastal Cleanup Day and Its Contribution to Marine Ecosystem Preservation
Summary
This review examines Coastal Cleanup Day initiatives and finds that participatory debris-removal programs simultaneously reduce physical marine pollution and build public environmental awareness, with their effectiveness amplified when combined with government support, international coordination, and sustainable waste-management policy.
The ocean, a vital natural resource, supports biodiversity, provides livelihoods, and regulates the global climate. Marine pollution is increasing due to plastic waste, industrial effluents, oil spills, and careless human activities, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems and coastal communities. This study explores the importance of Coastal Cleanup Day and its role in protecting and conserving marine environments. It identifies the primary causes and consequences of marine pollution and emphasizes the need for active community participation in coastal cleanup efforts. The literature review indicates that participatory cleanup initiatives not only help in removing marine debris but also enhance public awareness, promote environmental responsibility, and strengthen community involvement. International efforts such as the Ocean Cleanup Project, along with national campaigns like India's Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar, highlight the value of collective action. The study concludes that safeguarding marine ecosystems depends on strong government support, public participation, the adoption of eco-friendly practices, and the implementation of sustainable environmental policies.
