Researchers systematically reviewed analytical methods for detecting and characterizing microplastics in soil and water matrices, summarizing sampling techniques such as selective sampling and reduced-volume collection for terrestrial environments alongside density separation, organic matter degradation, microscopy, and spectroscopy approaches for aquatic systems.

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers conducted a systematic review of analytical methods used to quantify microplastics in Brazilian aquatic environments, finding that most studies rely on visual methods that can count but not chemically characterize particles, and that the absence of a standardized national methodology severely limits cross-study comparisons.

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers conducted a critical review of 41 publications examining how land use and other parameters influence microplastic presence in soils and groundwater, finding clear links between contamination sources tied to land use types and microplastic quantity, composition, color, and morphology, while identifying the need for standardized sampling and analytical methodologies.

Review of sampling, detection, and characterization methods for microplastics and quality control in water column and sediments

AI summary Read the abstract

This Spanish-language review surveys the methods used to sample, detect, and characterize microplastics in water and sediments, cataloguing the advantages and limitations of each approach. The authors highlight that the lack of standardized protocols makes it impossible to reliably compare studies — a critical obstacle to understanding how widespread microplastic contamination really is and what it means for ecosystems and human health.

Analytical methods for the determination of microplastics in the environment

AI summary Read the abstract

This review examines analytical methods used to identify and quantify microplastics in environmental samples, covering microscopy, spectroscopy, and chromatographic techniques as applied to water, soil, and biological matrices. The work evaluates the advantages and limitations of each method, discussing their real-world applicability for standardised microplastic monitoring across different sample types.
