Where the Atlas began. The most-cited papers in its first pull, and the moment the field turned from the ocean to the human body.

The Atlas did not start empty. Its first pull brought in 81,172 papers, close to the whole published record of microplastics research as it stood, and that record is worth understanding on its own terms. At its core it is a marine science library. The story of plastic in the human body is the newer chapter.

The paper that changed the question

For most of the field's history the question was about the ocean. This 2020 study moved it. Researchers found twelve plastic fragments in the placentas of women with healthy pregnancies, the first time microplastics had been documented in human placental tissue, including polypropylene and dyed plastics. It did not prove harm. What it did was make the human body a place the field now had to study, and much of what the Atlas has taken in since follows from that shift.

A marine science library

Rank the founding corpus by how often its papers are cited and the top of the list is almost entirely about the sea. The most cited are early reviews that named microplastics as a class of marine contaminant and set terms the field still uses. The single most striking number comes from a 2014 survey that put more than five trillion plastic pieces on the ocean surface, a baseline everyone has cited since. Other foundational work mapped where the particles collect, tracing them to shorelines across all six continents and to the synthetic fibers a single garment sheds in the wash, and where they come from, with one model estimating how much plastic rivers carry to the sea each year. Early reviews also documented the physical toll on the marine animals that eat them. This is the ground the Atlas was built on. For years, microplastics was an environmental science, and a mostly marine one.

The human turn

The founding corpus also holds the start of the other story. A widely cited 2017 review asked the question directly in its title, whether plastic is a human health issue, and concluded that inhaled or swallowed particles could plausibly reach tissue while being honest that the evidence was thin. Three years later came the placenta finding above. Put in order, the early literature reads like a field slowly turning its attention from the water to ourselves, and finding, each time it looked, that the particles had already arrived.

What it adds up to

Eighty one thousand papers is not a single sitting, and the Atlas does not pretend all of them matter equally. What the founding index captures is a starting point. A science that began at the shoreline and, right around the time the Atlas launched, was turning inward. Everything indexed since has been filling in that second story.
