The Scientific World JOURNAL 2024
Motia Irshad, Zarif Gul, Hayat Ullah, Raja Summe Ullah, Muhammad Ilyas Khan, Rafia Rehman, Ataf Ali Altaf, Shaheed Ullah

Summary

This review surveys all major PET recycling strategies — mechanical, chemical, and energy-recovery — outlining their environmental trade-offs and the potential to convert waste PET into value-added materials, while calling for optimized processes to reduce the ongoing contamination caused by landfilling and incineration.

This article aims to give an updated summary of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling methods and their impact on environmental concerns.Various recycling methods included primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary recycling. However, the advantages and disadvantages of all recycling methods have been considered. The PET is a widely used plastic in our daily life. After PET usage, waste PET is incinerated or directly thrown into the ground causing environmental contamination. Therefore, to save the environment, recycling PET has gained great interest. For this purpose, different methods of recycling have been proposed by different recyclers to overcome environmental pollution. This review aims to give a broad spectrum of PET recycling, covering each significant strategy used and future perspective.A detailed study of these recycling approaches suggests insights into optimizing processes for improved environmental remediation as well as the production of value-added materials.
