AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers assessed microplastic contamination in water and sediments at 12 sites along the Cháparra River in Arequipa, Peru, finding median abundances of 40–2,460 items/m³ in water and 67–500 items/kg in sediment, with fragments and particles under 1 mm in blue tones predominating in both matrices.

Researchers quantified microplastics in surface water and sediments at nine sites along the Huangáscar River in Peru's Cañete basin, finding fiber shapes (62–66%), blue color, and sub-millimeter sizes most prevalent, with a moderate positive but non-significant correlation between water and sediment microplastic concentrations.

Researchers measured microplastic abundance in water, sediment, and four fish and two shrimp species along a 5.3 km stretch of the lower Lacramarca River in Ancash, Peru, finding 280,666 MPs/m³ in water and 2,175 MPs/kg in sediment with fragments predominating, and demonstrating that microplastic loads in fish and shrimp stomachs and gills correlated with environmental concentrations.

Researchers conducted the first microplastics study in the lower Rímac River basin in Lima, Peru, finding a dramatic increase from 97 particles in November 2017 to 2,982 particles in August 2018, with fragments, films, filaments, and spherules present — raising concern given the river is the primary water source for metropolitan Lima.
Microplasticos En Sedimentos De Canales De Riego En El Centro Poblado De Madeán, Distrito De Madeán, Provincia De Yauyos, Región Lima, Perú

This study measured microplastic abundance and characteristics in sediments from irrigation canals in a rural area of Peru's Lima region. Microplastics were detected across all sampling sites, with size, color, and shape analysis revealing diverse contamination profiles in the agricultural waterways.

Researchers surveyed microplastic concentrations in the sand of three beaches on Peru's central coast during summer 2020, finding primary and secondary microplastics at densities of 117–202 items/kg, with fibers and fragments dominant and the most urbanized beach (Carpayo) showing the highest contamination levels.
