This study measured microplastic abundance and characteristics in sediments from irrigation canals in a rural area of Peru's Lima region. Microplastics were detected across all sampling sites, with size, color, and shape analysis revealing diverse contamination profiles in the agricultural waterways.

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers estimated the abundance, characteristics, and types of microplastics on three beaches along the northern tourist corridor of Piura, Peru, characterising the size, colour, and polymer types of particles found in beach sediments to assess contamination levels in this coastal region.

AI summary Read the abstract

This study characterizes microplastic contamination across three sandy beaches along the central coast of Peru, documenting the types, sizes, and distribution of particles present. The findings contribute to the growing body of evidence on microplastic pollution in South American coastal ecosystems, which remain comparatively understudied relative to European and North American coastlines.

Microplastics were detected in river sediments from the lower Rímac River basin in Peru, with concentrations linked to upstream urban and industrial plastic waste that enters the river system without adequate treatment.

Microplastics in river sediments in two streams in an Andean region of Peru

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers measured microplastic concentrations in surface sediments from two Andean streams in Peru, finding levels ranging from 0-2,216 items/kg in Ishoj stream and 0-6,383 items/kg in Uyru Rume stream, with highest concentrations near solid waste dumping sites. Fragments smaller than 1 mm dominated, polypropylene was the most common polymer by Raman analysis, and all particles were secondary microplastics.

First evidence of microplastics in the Quilca-Vítor-Chili river basin, Arequipa region, Peru

AI summary Read the abstract

This study documented microplastics for the first time in three Peruvian river basins in the Arequipa region, finding an average concentration of 35 particles per cubic meter of water across all sites, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the dominant polymers. Filaments made up over 70% of particles, suggesting textile fibers as a key source. The findings establish a contamination baseline for this region and highlight illegal landfills and agricultural plastic use as primary pollution drivers.
