ANÁLISE QUALI-QUANTITATIVA DE MICROPLÁSTICOS NO TRATO GASTROINTESTINAL DA Serrasalmus brandtii (LÜTKEN, 1875) NO RESERVATÓRIO MOXOTÓ – SUBMÉDIO SÃO FRANCISCO – BA

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers analyzed microplastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of 70 piranha (Serrasalmus brandtii) from Moxotó Reservoir in Brazil over seven sampling periods, identifying 94 microplastic particles classified by type, color, and size, confirming contamination in a carnivorous fish species and indicating environmental plastic pollution in the studied ecosystem.

Body Systems

Researchers conducted a systematic review of analytical methods used to quantify microplastics in Brazilian aquatic environments, finding that most studies rely on visual methods that can count but not chemically characterize particles, and that the absence of a standardized national methodology severely limits cross-study comparisons.
