Microplásticos y nanoplásticos: mecanismos de bioacumulación y toxicidad

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers conducted a PRISMA systematic review of microplastic and nanoplastic toxicity mechanisms, identifying four key paradigms: bioaccumulation, vector transport of co-contaminants, endocrine disruption, and translocation across biological barriers including the blood-brain and placental barriers, raising concerns about fetal exposure and transgenerational effects.

Body Systems

This Portuguese-language review synthesized 26 studies on microplastic and nanoplastic exposure, documenting bioacumulation across multiple organs—intestine, lungs, circulatory system, brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and reproductive system—triggering inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction linked to cardiovascular, respiratory, neurodegenerative, and reproductive diseases. The review underscores the systemic health threat of micro- and nanoplastics and the urgent need for expanded research on particle size, shape, and chemical interaction effects.
