Analisis Kinerja Kuantifikasi Mikroplastik dari Total Suspended Particulate dengan Metode Berbasis Peralatan Laboratorium Dasar

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers quantified atmospheric microplastics on the ITB campus in Indonesia using basic laboratory equipment on total suspended particulate samples, identifying fragment and fiber dominance at 1.3–7.3 particles per cubic meter—results comparable to studies using advanced µFTIR methods—demonstrating the feasibility of low-resource microplastic research.

Airborne microplastic monitoring: Developing a simplified outdoor sampling approach using pollen monitoring equipment

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers adapted standard pollen monitoring equipment (Burkard spore traps) into a simplified outdoor airborne microplastic sampler, testing it as the first application of this approach for identifying and quantifying outdoor airborne microplastics. The modified setup successfully captured and characterized particles, demonstrating a low-cost method for expanding global airborne microplastic monitoring networks.

How can contamination be prevented during laboratory analysis of atmospheric samples for microplastics?

AI summary Read the abstract

This study tested various laboratory practices to reduce contamination when measuring microplastics in air samples, finding that working under laminar flow reduced background contamination compared to fume hoods or open lab environments. Pre-treating filters by heating them to 450 degrees Celsius cut microplastic counts by 50%, and pre-filtering solutions was essential since working liquids themselves were contaminated. These quality control findings are critical because without proper contamination prevention, studies on airborne microplastics may significantly overcount or misidentify particles.
