Ocean pollution by plastics and microplastics
AI summary Read the abstract
This work addresses the growing crisis of ocean plastic and microplastic contamination, examining pathways, concentrations, and ecological impacts across marine environments. Understanding the full scope of ocean plastic pollution is foundational for developing intervention strategies to reduce the microplastic burden entering marine food webs and ultimately human diets.

AI summary Read the abstract
This study investigated the influence of rainfall intensity and catchment land use on microplastic loads exported from rivers during storm events. High-intensity rainfall significantly elevated microplastic concentrations in receiving rivers, and urban catchments contributed the highest particle loads, confirming that stormwater is a major episodic microplastic pathway.
Co-Designing Transdisciplinary Science for the Ocean We Want: Actions for Scientists to Enrich Ocean Literacy
AI summary Read the abstract
The EPICD framework proposes a structured transdisciplinary approach to address nano- and microplastic pollution by integrating public engagement, educator partnerships, interdisciplinary science, and digital communication tools. Improving ocean literacy through this feedback loop is critical for translating microplastic research into informed policy and sustainable public behavior.
Microplastic pollutions of the coastal environments : valuation methods
AI summary Read the abstract
This French doctoral thesis developed an elutriation system for extracting microplastics from coastal sand and investigated the aging of PVC, PET, and PBAT plastics immersed in a marine port over 502 days. PBAT aged most rapidly with significant estrogenic activity, PVC lost estrogenic compounds while adsorbing heavy metals, and PET showed little change, highlighting complex and polymer-specific aging behavior in marine environments.
Gyre Plastic: Science, Circulation and the Matter of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
AI summary Read the abstract
This dissertation examines how the Great Pacific Garbage Patch became a recognized environmental crisis, tracing how plastic circulates through ocean currents, laboratories, and public discourse. Using ethnographic methods and historical analysis, the author shows how diverse communities of scientists, activists, and media have constructed — and contested — knowledge about marine plastic pollution and its entanglement with marine life.
How frames and narratives in press releases shape newspaper science articles: the case of ocean plastic pollution.
AI summary Read the abstract
This study analyzed how university press releases frame ocean plastic science research and how these frames are adopted, adapted, or omitted by newspaper journalists, using Entman's framing theory on a paired dataset. Results show that journalists frequently reproduce press release framing and quotes, with scientists portrayed as heroes or warners, while social context and non-scientific perspectives remain largely absent from coverage.
