Beach microplastic images

Microplastics 2026
Javier Lorenzo-Navarro, Modesto Castrillón-Santana, Fiamma Mesa Santana, Edwin Ortiz Campos

Summary

This study isolated Bacillus strains from Vietnamese environments capable of degrading polyethylene, characterizing their enzymatic activity and plastic surface colonization. The findings demonstrate biodegradation potential in locally isolated bacteria, with relevance for developing Vietnam-specific plastic waste bioremediation strategies.

Study Type Environmental

This dataset contains high-resolution images of microplastics collected on a sandy beach under real environmental conditions. The images were acquired at Las Canteras Beach (28°08′02″N, 15°26′30″W), located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Images were captured at a height of approximately 1 meter using a digital camera and a smartphone, and include different sand types, illumination conditions, and the presence of natural debris such as rocks, shells, and organic material. The dataset is annotated at pixel level for semantic segmentation, where microplastic particles are labeled against the background. The images were divided into 256x256 pixel patches, resulting in a dataset of annotated image patches suitable for training and evaluating deep learning models for microplastic detection and segmentation.
