Beach microplastic images
Summary
This study investigated the effects of polyester microfiber exposure on the Pacific oyster's immune system, examining hemocyte activity and immune gene expression following microfiber ingestion. The findings demonstrate that textile microfibers can impair bivalve immunity, potentially increasing susceptibility to pathogens in microfiber-contaminated coastal waters.
This dataset contains high-resolution images of microplastics collected on a sandy beach under real environmental conditions. The images were acquired at Las Canteras Beach (28°08′02″N, 15°26′30″W), located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Images were captured at a height of approximately 1 meter using a digital camera and a smartphone, and include different sand types, illumination conditions, and the presence of natural debris such as rocks, shells, and organic material. The dataset is annotated at pixel level for semantic segmentation, where microplastic particles are labeled against the background. The images were divided into 256x256 pixel patches, resulting in a dataset of annotated image patches suitable for training and evaluating deep learning models for microplastic detection and segmentation.
