Influence of polyethylene microplastics on the sorption of organic contaminants in soils
AI summary Read the abstract
A study examined how polyethylene microplastics in soil alter the sorption of organic contaminants, addressing concerns about microplastics acting as vectors for persistent pollutants in terrestrial environments. Results showed that microplastics can change the distribution and bioavailability of co-occurring organic chemicals in soil.

Polyethylene microplastics influence the transport of organic contaminants in soil
AI summary Read the abstract
Laboratory experiments showed that polyethylene microplastics in soil altered the transport and distribution of organic contaminants, acting as secondary carriers that changed contaminant mobility through the soil matrix. The findings suggest microplastics in agricultural soils could inadvertently redistribute pesticides and other pollutants, with implications for groundwater quality.
Assessing the role of polyethylene microplastics as a vector for organic pollutants in soil: Ecotoxicological and molecular approaches

Polyethylene microplastics were shown to act as vectors for organic pollutants including pharmaceuticals and pesticides in soil, with earthworm bioaccumulation assays and molecular endpoints revealing that MPs increased contaminant uptake compared to soil exposure alone.
Impact of polyethylene microplastics on the vertical migration of pesticides in soil

Researchers investigated how polyethylene microplastics affect the vertical migration of pesticide mixtures in soil using stainless steel column experiments with sandy reference soil, finding that microplastics' hydrophobic surfaces and high sorption capacity altered the transport of 20 pesticides compared to uncontaminated soil.
Strong but reversible sorption on polar microplastics enhanced earthworm bioaccumulation of associated organic compounds
AI summary Read the abstract
Sorption experiments showed that organic compounds bound more strongly to polar biodegradable microplastics than to conventional polypropylene, but that strong binding reduced bioavailability to earthworms, with earthworm bioaccumulation of phenanthrene from MP-contaminated soil following patterns predicted by equilibrium partitioning rather than carrier effects.
Interactions of microplastics and soil pollutants in soil-plant systems
AI summary Read the abstract
This review synthesized literature on microplastic interactions with organic pollutants and heavy metals in the soil-plant system, covering sorption mechanisms, distribution characteristics, and transfer to crops. Microplastics were found to both adsorb and desorb contaminants depending on environmental conditions, acting as both concentrators and dispersal agents for soil pollutants.
