Do beachrocks affect microplastic deposition on the strandline of sandy beaches?
AI summary Read the abstract
This study tested whether the presence of beachrocks (rocky formations) on beaches affects how microplastics deposit on the shoreline, finding that these structures can influence microplastic accumulation patterns. Understanding physical factors that concentrate microplastics on beaches is useful for targeted cleanup efforts.
The strandline is one of the first deposition habitats of microplastics before they are integrated to the beach as a standing stock or finally removed. Beaches, entirely or partially protected by beachrocks, have different sediment dynamics and therefore may present variation in microplastic deposition. The aim of this work was to test if protected and unprotected (i.e., exposed to waves) areas of a sandy beach present different microplastic accumulation on the strandline - a habitat greatly influenced by both water and sediment dynamics. Microplastic (MP) amounts were significantly higher at the protected area (M = 642.6 ± 514.8 MP m, M = 130.6 ± 126.8 MP m, Mann-Whitney U test, U = 14.5, p = 0.0009), showing that beachrocks influence microplastic accumulation on the beach face. Therefore, hard structures parallel to the beach may also affect microplastics deposition on beach sediments, being important to consider these structures on microplastic surveys.

Researchers assessed the extent and variability of microplastic pollution across multiple beaches in the Bristol Channel, UK, finding that depositional environment characteristics significantly influenced the abundance and distribution of microplastic contamination in beach sand.
Effect of lithological properties of beach sediments on plastic pollution in Bodrum Peninsula (SW Türkiye)
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers examined how the lithological (rock and mineral) properties of beach sediments influence plastic pollution accumulation in Bodrum, Turkey. The study found that sediment grain size and composition affect where and how much plastic debris concentrates on beaches.
Microplastic beaching dependence on sediment grain size

Researchers sampled microplastics across a Mediterranean protected beach and found that accumulation is strongly influenced by sediment grain size — fine-grained sands trap more surface microplastics due to lower infiltration capacity — while fiber shape promotes entanglement in sediment pores and proximity to tourism and port activities drives spatial pollution hotspots.
Beach morphodynamics and its relationship with the deposition of plastic particles: A preliminary study in southeastern Brazil

Researchers found that beach morphodynamic characteristics influence the deposition of plastic particles on beaches in São Paulo, Brazil, with 745 particles recovered — mostly styrofoam — and accumulation patterns correlating with beach profile dynamics.
Relationships between sediment size distribution and microplastic abundance and characteristics along the strandline of a sandy embayment (Whitsand, Southwest England)
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers analyzed the relationship between sediment characteristics and microplastic distribution along a beach in southwest England. They found that microplastic abundance and type varied significantly across the strandline, with larger microplastics being more prevalent in coarser sediments. The study provides evidence that local sediment dynamics play an important role in determining where microplastics accumulate on sandy beaches.
