Advisory Report Inventory Uniform Measuring Method for Microplastic Fibres from Textiles
Original title: Adviesrapport inventarisatie uniforme meetmethode voor microplastic vezels uit textiel [Advisory report inventory uniform measuring method for microplastic fibres from textiles]
AI summary Read the abstract
This Dutch-language advisory report inventories uniform measurement methods for microplastic fibers released from textiles during wearing and washing. It is a policy and technical advisory document produced for the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

This Dutch-language report describes the development of a thermo-analytical quantification method for analyzing microplastic fibers shed from textiles. The method was developed to address the lack of standardized measurement tools for textile-derived microplastics, which represent a major source of microplastic emissions in the Netherlands.

This Dutch inventory identified and prioritized the land-based sources through which microplastics — particles smaller than 5 mm — enter the sea via rivers and other pathways. The report highlights products, production processes, and transport routes that contribute most to marine microplastic pollution.

This Dutch report by the RIVM assessed microplastic fiber shedding from synthetic clothing during wear and washing, finding that wastewater treatment plants remove 50-90% of these fibers but significant quantities still reach surface waters. The report recommends joint action by textile manufacturers, consumers, and wastewater operators to reduce microplastic fiber emissions.
