Ecological Effects of the MSC Zoe Incident on the Dutch Wadden Area, with Focus on Microplastics. NIOZ Report 2021-03
NIOZ report 2021-03

This Dutch-language report is the NIOZ assessment of the ecological effects of microplastics released when the MSC Zoe container ship lost cargo near the Dutch Wadden Islands in January 2019. Researchers documented contamination across the Wadden Sea ecosystem and evaluated potential long-term impacts on invertebrates, fish, and birds.
In totaal sloegen 342 containers overboord.

This Dutch report describes field research conducted in 2019 to document plastics and other debris deposited along Dutch coastlines and seabed following the MSC Zoe container ship accident, in which 342 containers were lost in the North Sea. Researchers monitored impacts on seabirds, fish, seafloor, and beaches. The study documents the environmental consequences of a large-scale accidental plastic spill event.

Following the 2019 cargo ship accident that spilled plastic pellets near the Dutch Wadden Sea, researchers assessed the impact on protected marine species and habitats. The spill highlighted how plastic pellet accidents can rapidly contaminate sensitive coastal ecosystems with microplastic precursors.
Ecological Effects of MSC Zoe Polystyrene Pellets Investigated in Experimental Marine Ecosystems

This Dutch-language study tested the ecological effects of polystyrene pellets released during the MSC Zoe container ship accident in mesocosm experiments with Wadden Sea invertebrates and juvenile flatfish. Researchers found statistically significant effects including reduced barnacle density, altered shellfish abundance, and slightly lower condition in sole, suggesting real ecological harm at realistic contamination levels.
MSC ZOE: Possible Effects of the Lost Containers on Seals
AI summary Read the abstract
This Dutch-language study examined the digestive tracts of harbor seals found dead on Dutch beaches following the January 2019 MSC Zoe container ship accident, which spilled over 300 containers including plastic pellets and components into the North Sea. Researchers assessed whether the dead seals showed evidence of plastic ingestion associated with the spill cargo. The study contributes to assessing the ecological impact of this large accidental plastic release event on North Sea marine mammals.
Potential Micro-Plastics Dispersal and Accumulation in the North Sea, With Application to the MSC Zoe Incident

Ocean particle tracking models were used to simulate the dispersal of microplastics following the MSC Zoe container ship accident, which spilled thousands of containers off the Netherlands in 2019. The study provides insights into how major plastic spills spread through marine environments and where particles accumulate.
