Trace metals concentrations in seawater and on microplastic particles from Mala Martinska beach sediments near Šibenik
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers determined trace metal concentrations on microplastic particles and in seawater from a Croatian Adriatic beach, finding measurable accumulation of zinc, cadmium, lead, and copper on plastic surfaces. The results confirm that microplastics in coastal sediments can concentrate heavy metals to levels above surrounding water concentrations.

Trace metals load on beached microplastics in the anthropogenically influenced estuarine environment - Croatian middle Adriatic
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers measured trace metal concentrations (cadmium, copper, lead, zinc) on beached microplastic particles from a Croatian Adriatic coast estuary, finding that metal loading varied by particle size and type. Smaller microplastics accumulated higher metal concentrations per unit mass, suggesting that as plastics fragment they become increasingly contaminated with toxic metals.
AI summary Read the abstract
This Croatian thesis measured trace metal concentrations in seawater and on microplastic particles from beach sediments at Mala Martinska near Sibenik, finding that microplastics adsorbed zinc, cadmium, lead, and copper from the surrounding marine environment. The study demonstrates that coastal microplastics act as concentrators of toxic metals in Adriatic beach sediments.
Levels of trace metals on microplastic particles in beach sediments of the island of Vis, Adriatic Sea, Croatia
AI summary Read the abstract
Plastic pellets from two beaches on the Croatian island of Vis were analyzed for eight trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn), finding concentrations substantially higher than reported ambient seawater values, indicating active metal sorption from the marine environment. The study provides evidence that Adriatic Sea plastic pellets accumulate trace metals at levels that could be transferred to marine organisms upon ingestion.
Correlation of microplastic type and metal association: Croatian coast case study (Žirje Island)

This Croatian coast study found that weathered beach microplastics were associated with metals including cadmium, lead, zinc, and copper. Microplastics can accumulate and transport heavy metals in the ocean, potentially increasing exposure risks for marine organisms and seafood consumers.
Correlation of metals and degraded marine (micro)plastic litter in geologically similar coastal areas with different anthropogenic characteristics
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers assessed trace metal concentrations adsorbed on degraded marine microplastics collected from two Croatian Adriatic coastal sites -- an estuarine and an open coastal location -- finding that polystyrene adsorbed the highest metal loads in the order Zn > Pb approximately equal to Cu > Cd, with the more anthropogenically influenced estuary showing overall higher metal contamination on plastic debris.
