Microplastic in Fresh Water Fish at Lubuk Yu River, Maran, Pahang
Summary
Researchers investigated microplastic contamination in freshwater fish collected from Lubuk Yu River in Malaysia, finding microplastics in fish tissues at both sampling sites. The study contributes early baseline data on freshwater microplastic pollution in Malaysia, where research on inland water contamination is still limited.
Contamination of the river by microplastics is a significant problem of worldwide. More or less it is a questionable either this microplastic already effected the freshwater organism. Therefore, this study aims to determine freshwater fish biodiversity and determine the abundance, distribution, composition of microplastics in fish from Lubuk Yu river, Maran, Pahang. Sampling was done at two different locations; middle and downstream, and for two months. Fishes caught and identified. Digestive gut of fish undergone digestion, density separation and filtration. The inspection of particles was identified, counted, and sorted out into a category based on shape, colour, and size. A total of 32 fishes were caught and represent 8 species. The most abundance species caught are Barbonymus schwanenfeldii, Cyclocheilichthys apogon, Hampala macrolepidota and Rasbora einthovenii with composition 18.75% each. Shannon index (E), Shannon's equitability (EH) both location middle stream and downstream are 1.41, 0.55 and 1.74, 0.59 respectively. Out of 8 species of fish only sample from Hypsibarbus wetmorei and Rasbora einthovenii contains microplastic. Microplastic are filament form, with the size ranging between 1.01 mm and 2.00 mm and colours varies from blue, black, red. In conclusion, study alarming us that our vast freshwater fish biodiversity is already exposed to microplastics.
