First evaluation of microplastics in shellfish Venus verrucosa L. (Bivalvia: Veneridae) in the Adriatic sea

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers conducted the first evaluation of microplastic contamination in the bivalve Venus verrucosa collected from three sites along the Croatian Adriatic coast, finding microplastics at all locations. The study provides baseline data for microplastic accumulation in a commercially harvested shellfish species from the Adriatic Sea.

First occurrence and composition assessment of microplastics in native mussels collected from coastal and offshore areas of the northern and central Adriatic Sea

AI summary Read the abstract

Microplastics were detected for the first time in native mussels from coastal and offshore areas of the northern and central Adriatic Sea, with chemical analysis confirming common plastic polymers and offshore populations also affected. The study establishes a baseline for microplastic contamination in an important Mediterranean commercial shellfish species.

Assessment of microplastic particles ingested by Mytilus galloprovincialis along the Adriatic coast

Researchers sampled 176 Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels from six stations across the Adriatic Sea as part of the INTERREG IT-HR MARLESS project, digesting tissue with acid and extracting microplastics via saturated sodium chloride filtration. Microplastics were detected at all sampled locations, with shape, size, and color characterization revealing widespread contamination across the study region.

Evaluation of human exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics related to the consumption of the striped venus clam Chamelea gallina caught in the Central Adriatic Sea (PLASTICVONG project)

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers quantified microplastic and nanoplastic contamination in striped venus clams from Italian coastal waters and estimated consumer exposure through shellfish consumption. Both microplastics and nanoplastics were found in clam tissues, with exposure levels dependent on harvesting location and consumption frequency.
