This systematic review of 13 studies examines how domestic laundering of synthetic textile clothing releases microplastics into aquatic environments, concluding that washing of synthetic fabrics is a primary driver of microplastic accumulation in rivers and oceans and that this burden will grow alongside increasing global consumption of synthetic materials.

Microplastic pollution in aquatic environments from washing synthetic textiles

AI summary Read the abstract

Washing synthetic textiles releases microplastic fibers into wastewater, and this study reviewed the scale of the problem and explored strategies to reduce emissions at the washing machine, garment design, and wastewater treatment levels. Textile laundering is considered one of the largest sources of microplastic fiber pollution reaching aquatic environments.

This Portuguese-language thesis studied the release of synthetic textile fibers (a major category of microplastics) during domestic laundry washing, finding that conventional washing machines and wastewater systems are not designed to capture these fibers before they enter the environment.
