This literature review applied ontological analysis to examine the implications of microplastic accumulation in the human body for modern biological health. The authors synthesized Indonesian and international research on exposure pathways and health effects to argue that microplastics represent a fundamental threat to human biological integrity.
ABSTRACTThis article aims to provide an ontological analysis ofmicroplastics in the human body and their implications for thenature of human existence and modern biological health. Aliterature review was conducted using recent national andinternational scientific articles that discuss the sources andcharacteristics of microplastics, exposure pathways, detectionof microplastics in human biological samples, toxicologicalimpacts, and related ethical and philosophical analyses. Thereview shows that microplastics are detected in several bodycompartments such as blood, placenta, stool, and breast milk,indicating chronic and hardly avoidable exposure. Biologically,microplastics may induce oxidative stress, inflammation, gutmicrobiota imbalance, and cellular dysfunction that cancontribute to chronic diseases. Ontologically, these findingsblur the boundary between the biological body andtechnological artefacts, as the modern human body becomesa material “archive” of plastic civilization. Ethically,microplastic pollution raises issues of environmental andintergenerational justice, especially for vulnerable groupssuch as fetuses, infants, and low income communities. Thearticle highlights the need for a multidisciplinary responsethrough stronger research, regulations to reduce single useplastics, development of a circular economy, and changes inconsumption patterns in order to better protect humanexistence and biological health.Keywords: microplastics; human body; biological health;modern existence; environmental ethics
