Synergistic Removal of Microplastics and Organic Matter in Desalination by Ferrous Iron/peracetic Acid System

Researchers found that a ferrous iron/peracetic acid oxidation system synergistically removes both microplastics and humic acid organic matter from seawater during desalination pretreatment, outperforming individual removal of either contaminant alone. Effective microplastic removal from seawater desalination systems is critical for ensuring that drinking water produced from ocean sources does not carry microplastic contamination into human consumption.
