AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers evaluated four organic matter digestion techniques for extracting microplastics ingested by marine zooplankton (Paracalanidae, Corycaeidae, Oncaeidae, and Chaetognatha families), assessing degradation efficiency, processing time, physical impact on particles, and ingestion rate estimation. The modified Md Amin et al. (2020) method performed best, preserving microplastic integrity without altering ingestion rates.

Researchers optimized a hydrogen peroxide digestion method for extracting and counting microplastics from zooplankton and fish larvae while preserving the physical and chemical integrity of the plastic particles, achieving over 85% recovery across 13 plastic types. Having a reliable, standardized method for quantifying microplastics in plankton is essential for accurately assessing how much plastic is entering marine food webs at the base of the food chain.
Customized digestion protocols for copepods, euphausiids, chaetognaths and fish larvae facilitate the isolation of ingested microplastics

Researchers developed optimized, low-cost tissue digestion protocols using potassium hydroxide and enzymes to reliably extract ingested microplastics from tiny marine animals including copepods, krill, arrow worms, and fish larvae — organisms that are critical links in ocean food webs. The protocols achieved over 98% tissue digestion and over 91% microplastic recovery without damaging the plastic particles. Standardized methods for small zooplankton are urgently needed to understand how microplastics move up marine food chains and ultimately reach fish and seafood consumed by humans.
