Summary

Researchers detected microplastics and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons sorbed on microplastics in surface water samples from the Konya Closed Basin in Turkey, finding 1,138 to 23,444 MP per cubic meter dominated by fragments (51%) and fibers (34%), with polyethylene, polypropylene, and cellophane as the most common polymer types, and assessed the associated contamination risk.

"In this study, microplastics, 16 PAHs sorbed on microplastics and the risk caused by microplastics were detected in surface water samples in Konya Closed Basin. The total of microplastics was determined as 1138 and 23444 MP/m3. Fragment (51%) microplastics were detected dominantly in the surface waters of the basin, followed by fiber (34%), film (10%), pellets (3%) and foam (2%). In terms of color distribution, approximately 70%of the microplastics detected are transparent and white, followed by blue, black, green, brown, yellow, pink, purple, orange and red were detected. 34% of microplastics are polyethylene (PE), 25% polypropylene (PP), 24% cellophane (CP), 12% polydiene (PD) and 5% polycarbonate (PC) type polymers. According to the contamination factor evaluation, 38% of surface waters were determined to be very highly polluted (CF>6). According to polymeric risk assessment, medium risk (10<H<100) was determined. According to the pollution load index values, it was determined that the PLI value of the regions in the basin and the entire basin was greater than 1 and was classified as a polluted region. It has been determined that the surface waters in the basin are close to residential areas and are exposed to pollution from traffic and agriculture. PAH concentration due to microplastics in surface waters was detected between 393-24755 ng/g. Sources of PAHs have been identified as domestic fuel use, traffic-related diesel engines, oil pollution, and factory emissions. It is necessary to take precautions in terms of microplastic and PAH pollution in the surface waters in the basin."
