Microplastics distribution in water and sediments from a rural endoreic lake on the volcanic island of Pantelleria (Central Mediterranean Sea)

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers assessed microplastic distribution in surface water and sediments of Bagno dell'Acqua Lake on the remote volcanic island of Pantelleria in the Central Mediterranean, finding homogeneous contamination in surface waters dominated by fibers (over 90%) despite the island's low urbanization and lack of industrialization.

Study Type Environmental

Microplastics are widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and lakes are regarded as important sinks for this pollution. In this work, the presence and spatial distribution of microplastics were assessed in surficial waters and sediments of Bagno dell'Acqua Lake, a small rural endoreic lake located in the National Park of Pantelleria Island. The volcanic island of Pantelleria lies in the middle of Sicily Channel about 70 km far from the European and African mainland, is poorly urbanized and not industrialized, although it can experience a sustained seasonal touristic flow. Samples of surficial water were collected in different sectors of the lake and sediment sampling was carried out at seven stations along the lake shoreline, plus one station at 3.6 m depth. A homogeneous distribution of microplastics was found in surface waters, with a dominance of fibers ( 90 Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/559553/document

First report of microplastics in water and sediments of the alkaline Bagno dell’Acqua Lake (Pantelleria Island, southern Italy)

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers conducted the first assessment of microplastic contamination in Bagno dell'Acqua Lake on Pantelleria Island in the central Mediterranean Sea, a small alkaline lake far from major industrial activity. They found microplastics in both surface water and sediment, with fibers dominating the water samples and fragments being more common in sediment. The study demonstrates that even remote, scarcely populated lakes can accumulate significant amounts of microplastics in their sediment.

Microplastic and Fibre Contamination in a Remote Mountain Lake in Switzerland

Microplastic pollution in the surface waters of Italian Subalpine Lakes

AI summary Read the abstract

Surface water samples from Italian subalpine lakes were found to contain microplastics, including fibers and fragments, at concentrations suggesting atmospheric deposition and local tourism as contributing sources. The study extends microplastic monitoring to high-altitude freshwater lakes, showing that even remote mountain water bodies are affected by plastic pollution.

The emerging issue of microplastics: ongoing investigation in water and sediments of subalpine lakes

AI summary Read the abstract

This Italian study identified microplastics in subalpine lakes and characterized their polymer types and abundance, adding to evidence that microplastics have reached even remote freshwater ecosystems far from industrial centers. The findings underscore the ubiquity of plastic contamination across diverse freshwater environments.
