Microplastics distribution in water and sediments from a rural endoreic lake on the volcanic island of Pantelleria (Central Mediterranean Sea)
Summary
Researchers assessed microplastic distribution in surface water and sediments of Bagno dell'Acqua Lake on the remote volcanic island of Pantelleria in the Central Mediterranean, finding homogeneous contamination in surface waters dominated by fibers (over 90%) despite the island's low urbanization and lack of industrialization.
Microplastics are widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and lakes are regarded as important sinks for this pollution. In this work, the presence and spatial distribution of microplastics were assessed in surficial waters and sediments of Bagno dell'Acqua Lake, a small rural endoreic lake located in the National Park of Pantelleria Island. The volcanic island of Pantelleria lies in the middle of Sicily Channel about 70 km far from the European and African mainland, is poorly urbanized and not industrialized, although it can experience a sustained seasonal touristic flow. Samples of surficial water were collected in different sectors of the lake and sediment sampling was carried out at seven stations along the lake shoreline, plus one station at 3.6 m depth. A homogeneous distribution of microplastics was found in surface waters, with a dominance of fibers ( 90 Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/559553/document
