Effect of Boundary Conditions on Three-dimensional Distribution of Microplastics Flowing Into Tokyo Bay

Summary

Researchers used three-dimensional diffusion analysis to model the distribution of microplastics flowing into Tokyo Bay from rivers, accounting for three forms (dissolved, small-particle adsorbed, large-particle adsorbed) and processes including adsorption, desorption, mineralisation, and sedimentation, finding that boundary conditions at river inflows and the bay mouth significantly influenced the spatial distribution of microplastics across the bay.
