Entangled Echoes: Converting Oceanic Chaos into Textile Harmony
Summary
This garment design project transformed ocean waste materials into a hand-knitted textile artwork using biodegradable fibers in oceanic colors, aiming to raise awareness of marine microplastic and microfiber pollution through sustainable fashion.
Marine debris and ocean pollution are pressing issues today. Microplastics and microfibers, mainly from textiles, pose serious risks to marine life and humans. This garment aims to raise awareness through sustainable fashion, transforming oceanic chaos into biodegradable textile harmony. The design represents marine debris with vibrant colors like greens, blues, natural white, and blacks, symbolizing marine life and pollution. Intricate hand-knitting techniques and tangled fiber scraps create textures mimicking ocean waste, evoking movement and fluidity. Hand-knitted with needles of various sizes, the garment features garter and drop stitches for diverse densities and textures. This garment is sustainable because only natural fibers, including 100% certified cotton yarns and silk fiber scraps, were used for their biodegradability, and no textile waste was generated during production. By showcasing the beauty and harmony of sustainable textile art, the garment offers a tangible example of how creativity and environmental responsibility can coexist.
