Summary

This review paper looks at how the fashion industry is turning plastic waste, including plastic pulled from oceans, into new textiles instead of letting it break down into microplastics. This "upcycling" approach matters because it may help reduce the amount of plastic pollution and microplastics that end up in our water, food, and eventually our bodies.

The current economic model adopted by most companies is called linear. However, increasingly the picture of environmental degradation has caused fuss and concern in society. The production of waste that is disposed of irregularly is extremely worrying.Plastic, for example, reaches the end of the production chain being, above all, for the oceans, a great source of pollution. The textile industry, for example, has shown interest in the circular economy model based on the concept of cradle to cradle and based on upcycling instead of recycling. In this logic, new products are being currently introduced on the market with technology so that it is always in the feedback market.Products that, in the past, were determined to be a waste, have added value, and are sustainable to the point of obtaining ecological certification from the European Union.Sustainability, innovation, and new environmental technologies are guidelines of the circular economy model. The textile industry is increasingly investing in research based on these pillars for the development of the materials, such as fibers for making fabrics using plastic which is removed from nature, such as those that can be rescued from the oceans. The upcycling concept has gained visibility because it introduces a technical quality product on the market that has a potential for cyclical rotation in the production chain. From its transformation with environmental technologies to the design and textile engineering, this set of new business and marketing strategies defines the new concepts of the green market.
