A Complementary Assessment of Plastic Pollution Across Shoreline and Bottom Compartments of Bung Xang Lake, a Multifunctional Urban Lake in Can Tho, Vietnam
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers studied plastic pollution along the shoreline and lake bottom of Bung Xang Lake, an urban lake in Can Tho City, Vietnam. Plastic made up most of the litter found in both areas, with all shoreline and bottom sites rated as having very high plastic abundance, though the study did not trace where the plastic came from or how it moved between locations.
Multifunctional urban lakes provide ecosystem services but may accumulate plastic waste from surrounding activities. This study assessed plastic pollution along the shoreline and within a sampled bottom-deposition area of Bung Xang Lake, Can Tho City, Vietnam. Plastic represented 99.19% of shoreline litter abundance and 95.63% of dry mass. Exploratory omnibus tests yielded p-values of 0.023 and 0.031 for Abundance density and Mass density, respectively, but no Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparison was significant, and unverified transect independence limits between-site inference. All 12 shoreline transects were classified as Extremely Dirty by the Clean Coast Index and as Very High Abundance by the Plastic Abundance Index (PAI = 22.66–92.75). Plastic represented 97.68% of item abundance and 86.49% of dry mass among 560 bottom-litter items. Packaging Plastics dominated the bottom plastic assemblage; 91.77% of plastic items measured 100–500 mm, and all four bottom transects showed Very High Abundance under the operationally adapted PAI (19.71–31.62). The findings provide complementary evidence of plastic accumulation in two physical compartments of the same urban lake without establishing direct transport between them. The observed litter composition may inform management planning for the sampled areas, but specific sources, input fluxes, and intervention effectiveness require further investigation.

Distribution of microplastics in surface water of tropical urban lakes: A case study in Ha Noi, Vietnam
AI summary Read the abstract
Surface water surveys across three urban lakes in Hanoi found microplastics in all locations, with abundance highest in West Lake, which is surrounded by dense population, restaurants, and aquaculture activity. The findings confirm that urban lakes in developing Southeast Asian cities are significant microplastic repositories, with direct implications for the people who use these waters for recreation, fishing, and drinking water supply.
Risk levels of microplastic pollution in surface water and sediments at Ba Be Lake

Researchers assessed microplastic pollution in surface water and sediments of Ba Be Lake, Vietnam, documenting MP concentrations, polymer types, and spatial distribution to characterize contamination levels and ecological risk in this protected freshwater lake ecosystem.
Microplastic concentrations in urban lake environments of Hanoi and rivers in Bac Ninh, Northern Vietnam, under COMPOSE (2019-2021) and CounterMEASUREII (2021-2022) projects
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers measured microplastic concentrations in four lakes in Hanoi and two rivers in Bac Ninh province, Vietnam, as part of two international research projects spanning 2019-2022. Using a 80-micrometer mesh net, enzymatic digestion, and density separation, they characterized particle abundance, morphology, and size for fragments, fibers, and films. The study provides quantitative baseline data on microplastic contamination in urban freshwater environments in northern Vietnam.
Microplastics in the surface water of urban lakes in central Vietnam: Pollution level, characteristics, and ecological risk assessment
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers surveyed seven urban lakes in central Vietnam and found moderate levels of microplastic contamination, with concentrations varying between dry and wet seasons. Fibers were the most common type of microplastic found, primarily made of polypropylene and PET, and ecological risk assessments indicated low to moderate risk levels for the lake ecosystems.
Microplastic concentrations in riverine and lake environments of Da Nang province and Quang Nam provinces, Central Vietnam, under COMPOSE (2019-2021) and CounterMEASUREII (2021-2022) projects
