Toxicity of triclosan adsorbed in microplastic in fish hepatoma cell line, PLHC-1
AI summary Read the abstract
Lab tests found that polypropylene microplastics can absorb triclosan, an antibacterial chemical, especially under normal water conditions rather than acidic ones. When fish liver cells were exposed to these plastic particles carrying triclosan, cell survival dropped and cell stress markers rose, suggesting the plastics may carry harmful chemicals in water.
Triclosan (TCS), a widely used antibacterial agent in personal care products, is frequently detected in water bodies along with microplastics, particularly polypropylene (PP). These microplastics can absorb and transport chemical pollutants, potentially affecting the distribution of these contaminants and increasing ecological risks. However, the role of PP microplastics in the movement of TCS and their effects on aquatic organisms remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the adsorption of TCS onto PP microplastics under different pH conditions and evaluated the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by TCS-adsorbed PP in the fish hepatoma cell line PLHC-1. TCS adsorption onto PP microplastics was studied under different pH conditions, with characterization performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). To determine biological toxicity, PLHC-1 cells were exposed to PP microplastics with adsorbed TCS, and cell viability along with intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was measured. FT-IR spectroscopy showed characteristic TCS-associated peaks on PP under the unadjusted pH condition (pH 6.67), whereas these peaks were not clearly observed under the acidic condition (pH 3.96). The presence of TCS-adsorbed PP microplastics led to a significant reduction in the viability of PLHC-1 cells, which was dependent on the concentration of TCS. For PP/TCS prepared using 160 μg/mL TCS, cell viability decreased to approximately 50%, while intracellular ROS increased to 539.62% of the control. The study's results indicate that PP microplastics can associate with TCS and the resulting PP/TCS material retains biologically relevant cytotoxic and oxidative effects in PLHC-1 cells. This suggests that PP microplastics could serve as carriers for toxic substances in aquatic environments, thereby increasing the ecological threats to aquatic organisms.

The influence of different polymer types of microplastics on adsorption, accumulation, and toxicity of triclosan in zebrafish
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers investigated how different polymer types of microplastics affect the toxicity and bioaccumulation of the antimicrobial chemical triclosan in zebrafish. They found that polypropylene microplastics had the highest capacity to adsorb triclosan and that co-exposure significantly worsened oxidative stress, lipid damage, and neurotoxicity compared to triclosan alone. The study demonstrates that the type of microplastic polymer matters when assessing the combined environmental risks of plastics and chemical pollutants.
Adsorption behavior of triclosan on microplastics and their combined acute toxicity to D. magna
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers studied how the antibacterial chemical triclosan attaches to different types of microplastics in water and tested their combined toxicity on water fleas. They found that triclosan readily adsorbed onto polystyrene, polyethylene, and polypropylene microplastics, with the process influenced by water chemistry factors like pH and salt content. When water fleas were exposed to microplastics carrying triclosan, the combined toxicity was greater than from either contaminant alone.
DETECTION OF TRICLOSAN POLLUTANTS ADSORBED ON POLYPROPYLENE MICROPLASTICS USING SIMPLE BIOMARKERS IN THE EMBRYOS OF Oryzias javanicus (BLEEKER, 1854)

Embryo biomarkers in Oryzias javanicus fish showed that polypropylene microplastics adsorbed with triclosan caused more developmental disruption than either contaminant alone, including altered somite number, heart rate, yolk absorption, hatching time, and body length.
Toxicity assessment of pollutants sorbed on microplastics using various bioassays on two fish cell lines
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers collected microplastic samples from ocean expeditions and tested their toxicity using two fish cell lines, finding that cell lines differed in sensitivity and that microplastics with sorbed pollutants were toxic to cells. The results suggest that real-world microplastics carrying accumulated chemical pollutants pose a chemical toxicity risk to marine organisms beyond just the physical effects of ingesting plastic.
Triclosan Sorbs Highly on Microplastics

This study investigated the sorption of triclosan, an antimicrobial endocrine-disrupting compound, onto various types of microplastics in aquatic environments. The results showed that triclosan binds readily to microplastics, demonstrating that plastic particles can act as vectors concentrating this contaminant in water bodies.
