From Field Measurements to Better WASH Data: A Framework for Accessible, Field-Deployable Environmental Monitoring

Testing water safety in remote or low-resource areas is often slow and expensive because samples usually need to be sent to a lab, which means problems like contamination can go undetected for a long time. This paper describes a new portable tool called EcoExposure™ that lets people test water for things like microplastics right on the spot, while also logging photos, location, and notes in one place. Making this kind of monitoring faster and more accessible could help communities catch water safety issues sooner, which matters since microplastics have been linked to potential health risks that scientists are still working to fully understand.
WASH programs depend on reliable information about water sources, environmental conditions, and potential risks. Yet many measurements still require laboratory analysis, specialized equipment, sample transport, or fragmented data workflows. These constraints limit frequency, geographic coverage, and continuity—especially in distributed and lower-resource settings. Field-deployable monitoring offers two complementary opportunities. First, selected laboratory-dependent measurements can be translated into portable workflows where scientifically feasible. Second, measurements and observations already generated in the field can be made easier to capture, retain, and centralize without replacing existing instruments. EcoExposure™ is being developed as a modular platform that combines specialized field measurements (initially microplastics/nanoplastics) with a general field-data module for photographs, GPS, instrument readings, and free-text notes. The guiding principle is simple: measure where people are, retain the information, connect observations across place and time, and use the resulting data to improve understanding and decisions.
