From Field Measurements to Better WASH Data: A Framework for Accessible, Field-Deployable Environmental Monitoring

Testing water quality for things like microplastics usually requires sending samples to a lab, which is slow, expensive, and often impossible in remote or low-resource areas, meaning contamination can go undetected for a long time. This paper describes a new portable tool called EcoExposure™ that's being developed to let people test water and record environmental data directly in the field, using photos, GPS, and simple readings instead of lab equipment. If successful, this kind of tool could help communities catch water safety problems, including microplastic contamination, faster and more often, especially in places that currently have little access to testing.

WASH programs depend on reliable information about water sources, environmental conditions, and potential risks. Yet many measurements still require laboratory analysis, specialized equipment, sample transport, or fragmented data workflows. These constraints limit frequency, geographic coverage, and continuity—especially in distributed and lower-resource settings. Field-deployable monitoring offers two complementary opportunities. First, selected laboratory-dependent measurements can be translated into portable workflows where scientifically feasible. Second, measurements and observations already generated in the field can be made easier to capture, retain, and centralize without replacing existing instruments. EcoExposure™ is being developed as a modular platform that combines specialized field measurements (initially microplastics/nanoplastics) with a general field-data module for photographs, GPS, instrument readings, and free-text notes. The guiding principle is simple: measure where people are, retain the information, connect observations across place and time, and use the resulting data to improve understanding and decisions.
