Persistent Influx of Atmospheric Microplastics and Nanoplastics to Mount Everest Driven by Large Scale Circulation
Summary
Scientists found tiny plastic particles (microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics) blowing through the air all the way up to Mount Everest, one of the most remote places on Earth, carried by large wind patterns from far-off sources. This shows that plastic pollution has spread so widely that literally no place on the planet is untouched, meaning the air we breathe almost everywhere may contain these particles. While this study focuses on tracking where the plastic travels rather than its health effects, the finding adds to growing concerns about how unavoidable plastic exposure has become in daily life.
This dataset contains the source data supporting the study “Persistent Influx of Atmospheric Microplastics and Nanoplastics to Mount Everest Driven by Large Scale Circulation.” It includes the underlying microplastic, nanoplastic, and meteorological datasets used in the analyses, together with source files for the main figures (Figures 1–4) and spatial/trajectory datasets associated with Figures 4, S9, and S10. These files support the reported atmospheric MNP abundance, seasonal variation, transport-pathway analysis, and regional deposition assessment for the Mount Everest and Tibetan Plateau study area.
